The Painted Suitcase

Ah...Christmas break! I love the week after Christmas, when no one has any responsibilities and you can just let down. It's such a fun, relaxing time! I've been spending the first few days of my break working on some projects. The major one I'm working on is something I started months ago, and ran into a number of snags with. Hopefully I'll be sharing that with you by the end of this week/beginning of next week, but I can't make any promises on that.

The other smaller project I did some work on is an old suitcase that's been sitting in our basement for a couple years. We got it from my grandma's house after she passed away. I like the sense of history it has, but as it was it wasn't very interesting.

I had seen lots of others around blogland who had painted their suitcases and made them look fantastic, so I thought I'd try my hand at it. Below is the result.

I'm pretty happy with the finished product.

Unfortunately the paint didn't stick to the suitcase that well, so when I transported it to take these pictures some of the paint rubbed off the handle. I've got some sealer that I'm going to spray the entire thing with though, which should solve that problem. :)

That's all for now! Hopefully I'll be sharing again with you soon!

  1. I love how it turned out! You just gave me inspiration to pull out one or two of the old suitcases I have picked up at local thrift stores and try my hand at painting them.

  4. Visiting by way of the Trendy Treehouse linky and wanted to come by to pay my compliments on your painted suitcase project. It came out beautifully! Sorry to hear about the paint chipping off, but hopefully the clear coat will preserve the rest of your lovely project! Happy New Year! Jenn

  5. It looks great. I have some Samsonite suitcases sitting around in an odd color. I've been debating between paint and decopauge. Thanks for the paint inspiration.

  6. Hi, found you thru theshabbychiccottage. Wonderful idea!!!! I see these cases all of the time but always pass them up because they usually are very unattractive, but after seeing how yours turned out - FANTASTIC - I am off to the thrift store to try my hand at painting one.

  15. I love it! Did you use a certain type of paint?

  16. Steph: I just used some flat latex paint I had sitting around, but I think any paint should work, so long as it spray it with a sealer when you're done. :)

  17. I was going to ask the same questian as Steph. It would be fun for us to see a little how you made it so we can make our own! :-) Did you prime it? Just used a brush and latex paint and a glaze I assume? It's beautiful!

  19. LOVE the painted suitcase, Rob!!! My granddad has some old suitcases that I wanted, but I wasn't a big fan of the colors! I love how the painting turned out, though, so I'll have to do that too!
